ALUMNI CORNER

Congratulations to Melissa Camacho-Whittaker (June, 2004) and Carmen Maron (April, 2004) who graduated in June from Level II of the Ayurvedic Institute Training.  Melissa also completed Level I of the Ayurdoula training with Ysha Oakes in New Mexico.  Onward and upward - go forth and spread the knowledge!

Rachel Hollingsworth (July, 2006) has this month moved to Sedona, after completing her work at the College of Micronesia.  We're very pleased to have her here.  She intends to teach yoga and work in her related field of health and fitness.  This month she's assisting Kevin and Mira in the kitchen.

Taylor Cooper (March, 2007) wrote from Steamboat, CO, that she is having a "blast" teaching her good friends how to meditate, chant and use the netti!   She also taught her first yoga class on June 11th.  Congratulations, Cooper.

Aria Peterman (February, 2007) reports that her dream cabin in the woods has been completed.  With some help from family and friends, Aria and crew had to transport all the materials by water craft to the beautiful spot she had chosen.  She's out working on a charter right now, but will be back in September to enjoy the fruits of her labor.  Aria is taking reservations for next summer (hot water and electricity not guaranteed).

Our Auyrvedic Apprentices this month are Kalen Lawson (June, 2004) and Jessie Keller (June, 2004).   These cousins completed their training together in 2004 and have reunited in the kitchen under the direction of Kevin.  Lots has changed since they were here and they have adapted wonderully.  It also looks like they're having fun!

Note:  Alumni are encouraged to use this column to re-connect, catch-up, and/or share any experiences since graduation.  Send info to Sydney.

The Adventures of Lionheart,  Temple Cat

I recently received the following letter/announcement via email from Marnie Gustavson, Ruth's sister, who has been working with widows and orphans in Afghanistan.  I found her latest news flash exciting and may be of interest to the graduates of 7 Centers.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Grand Opening of 7 Centers Yoga Arts Sister Studio in Kabul, Afghanistan, sponsored by PARSA (Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Support for Afghanistan)

Dear Lionheart,
After twenty-five years of listening to my sister, Ruth, talk about the healing and spiritual benefits of Yoga, I can say that she has definitely made an impact on my life and my work. I am pleased to announce the opening of what is probably the first yoga studio in Afghanistan for Afghans.

Our studio features:
• Yoga practice that does not require yoga mats, as
we have none.
• A Muslim privacy curtain for co-ed yoga classes, separating men and women during the instruction.
• A door that locks, (our staff insists on trying to
serve tea to our guests during yoga sessions)!
A meditation series entitled "Focusing” based on Eugene Gendlin’s work using the Afghan poet, Rumi’s poem “The Guest House” as the meditation imagery to transform reactions to thoughts and feelings. (Adapted to Afghan culture by Dr. Patricia Omidian)

• “Yoga for Kids” outreach program for the work we are doing in orphanages.

• A resident American Yoga Instructor, Molly Howitt, who has taken on the heroic and lonely job of training four of our Afghan physiotherapy staff in Yoga.

And finally,
• Four of your yellow Afghan kitty-cousins .  They are called “Dirty Socks”, “Little Lion”, “Rock Bunny” and “Bruiser”.  They are not yet as refined as you at understanding Yoga arts, but they are good at advising on how to stay sane while working in Kabul.

Following the yoga and meditation practices that my sister Ruth designs for me routinely is what has kept me healthy in mind and body during the last two years while working in Afghanistan.

Our goal is to institute an exchange program and invite Yoga Instructors to come to Kabul and conduct basic workshops for our Afghan trainees. Any and all support would be deeply appreciated.

My son, Colin, just visited us and he can address anyone’s security concerns about travel. His blog is posted at www.marniegustavson.blogspot.com.  Salaam!!!!

So, if you are interested in pursuing this opportunity to teach yoga in Afghanistan, please contact Ruth via email, yoga@7centers.com for more information.

Staying Cool This Summer

Summer heat can really aggravate fiery Pitta dosha. Before you reach for that next ice cream cone to keep you cool, try following these simple Ayurvedic tips:

  • Fluids –Keep your body extra hydrated with ROOM TEMPERATURE drinks such as water infused with cucumber or fennel, coconut water, homemade spearmint / peppermint sun tea, aloe vera gel, and fresh fruit juices.  For added effect - drink these from a silver cup.     (Remember to avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks like cola and coffee which further dehydrate.)
  • Neem – Neem oil applied on the skin has natural sun protection qualities. Make a soothing paste with neem powder, aloe vera gel, and cilantro pulp to apply over common summer skin rashes, boils, acne, poison ivy, and itchy, swollen bug bites.  Neem soaps, shampoos, and toothpastes are also available for summer cleansing.
  • Rosewater –  For instant mid-day refreshment try a quick spritz of rosewater on the face. For red irritated eyes, place cotton balls dipped in rosewater over eyelids and rest for 10 minutes.
  • Oils – Sun exposure, pools and seawater really dehydrate the skin.  Keep skin moisturized with a daily Coconut oil massage.  Keep internally moisturized by cooking with pitta reducing Ghee.  A little melted ghee in the dry nasal passages can also help prevent summertime Nose Bleeds.
  • Moonlight – Take an evening stroll in the moonlight.   A great summertime exercise is to do a series of yoga Moon Salutations that bring in cooling lunar energy.
  • Aromatherapy – Soak at the end of the day in a warm bath with few drops of Jasmine essential oils.   Finish your evening ritual by rubbing a drop of Sandalwood essential oil on the third-eye chakra and temples. Do this before bedtime meditation or prayers to stay mentally cool.
  • Color Therapy – Wearing whites, blues and greens will send out pitta pacifying vibrations.
  •  Lassi – Prepare this traditional Indian drink by mixing 1 part fresh plain yogurt and 3 parts water in a blender.  Garnish with roasted cumin seeds and cilantro leaves. Perfect for an afternoon pick me up.

 Vedic Astrology

Using Swara as a Predictive Technique

There are many predictive techniques used in Vedic astrology, including one that involves swara, or yogic nostril breathing to determine a “yes” or “no’ response to a particular question. In a way, this technique incorporates two branches of Vedic astrology: one called Nimitta (using omens based on the concept of the interconnectedness of all things, including planetary cycles) and another branch called Prashna (the art of answering a question based on the time the question is asked).

Remember this is for a “yes” or “no” question only, and one should be sincere in forming the query. It is an art form to ask the question in a precise way to receive an accurate answer. It is suggested to be in a centered and contemplative space before working with this technique.

You must keep in mind the day of the week when you are asking the question, as the response of “yes” and “no” will vary depending on the day (each day of the week corresponds to a specific planet).

If asking a question on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Saturday, and the right nostril is the clearer one, then the answer is “yes.” If the left nostril is the clear one – then the answer is “no.”

If asking a question on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, and the right nostril is the clearer one, the answer is “no.” If the left nostril is the clear one – the answer is “yes.”

Note that the responses are reversed depending on the day of the week. This technique is related to the ida and the pingala, the two energy channels on either side of the spine, as well as to the solar and lunar energies that are present. Supposedly nostril dominance is very much influenced by the movement of the planets.

This is an interesting technique that may take time to perfect, and fun to use!

Debra Infante, Vedic astrologer, can be reached at (928) 639-0623 for astrological consultations, either in person or by phone.
