The Adventures of Lionheart,  Temple Cat

Creating a Place of Peace and Power

This is my latest spiritual experiment that is amazing. It is a 60-day non-human program of learning to be in this world but not of it. The ancestors tell us that the most effective force in the world of human beings is learning divine non-attachment and discovering our own center of peace from which we carry out our lives. This journey begins by letting go and freeing yourself from your attachments.

Here are the stages:

1) Mark your calendar for the beginning and end of the program.

2) Before you begin the program, write an agreement letter to your Higher Self or the Teacher Within. The Agreement is to surrender everything that relates to humanness or catness (the form) as in my case, to your Master Self. Write down on a piece of  paper that you are willing to give up everything on the 3rd dimension in order to experience your Self as a spiritual being having an experience in body form. Like me, I chose to have this experience in a tabby cat body.

Put your statement in writing and leave nothing out.  Surrender all possessions, family, friends, likes, dislikes, fears, needs, wants and opinions - anything you are attached to. As part of the ritual, I visualized a big bird bath as a place to release everything into and then I read outloud,

"I let go of all my possessions-my cat collar (happily), my cat bowl, my tiger placemat, hairbrush and bottle of special kitty treats, my food bin, cans of tuna, purple bear and blue wool shawl.  I let go of my memories of the big gray bully tom cat, the sneaky black cat who eats my food, and tarty girlfriend with yellow eyes. My love of hunting, eating, playing and especially napping...my dislike of being carted around, being petted when I feel like sleeping, and cold water. I let go of my fear of loud sharp noises and dogs that like to chase cats... of my need to belong to someone, have a home and my desire to be adored and the center of attention. I let go of my job as a temple cat, my territory and all my family. I let go of my sleek body, personality and intelligence."

What is left..... is Pure Spirit.

In this process of letting go, you start see the world from spirituality rather than from materiality. And as feelings and upsets arise, you say to yourself -I surrender to spirit. You still go about your life as usual with all the daily activities and engagements; however, your the inner world has altered and there is a place of peace and power that starts to change your experience of the outer world.

Protein for Vegetarians

Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of sattvic (pure) foods. Therefore, due to karmic and health reasons, Ayurveda promotes a vegetarian, meat-free, lifestyle.  Many people are concerned with how to get sufficient protein in their diet without animal foods.

The key to getting the proper amount of protein is having a well balanced diet. By combining various types of protein packed foods, we are able to receive all 8 of the essential amino acids that our body needs.

Food combinations such as lentils with rice, vegetables and Indian paneer cheese, or almond butter on whole grain toast, provide the sustaining protein our busy lives require.

Examples of good sources of vegetarian protein:

  • Nuts - almonds (soaked & peeled), cashews, coconuts, Brazil nuts, macadamias, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, walnuts etc.
  • Seeds - flax,  psyllium, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower
  •  Dairy - heated milk, yogurt, fresh, soft cheeses - Indian Paneer, ricotta, cottage cheese, feta, goat cheese
  • Whole Grains - rye, quinoa, amaranth, millet, muesli, rice
  • Plants - most vegetables and fruits contain small amounts of protein
  • Lentils & Beans – Indian mung beans, toor dal,&  urad dal, split peas green beans, chick peas, navy, kidney, adzuki, lima, etc.**Note: All lentils and beans must be thoroughly soaked and cooked well. Use spices such as mustard seeds, cumin, coriander, fennel, ajwain, and asafetida help to digest pulses more easily.

 Vedic Astrology

Planetary Energies in September

September is a month that begins with eclipse energy, as we have experienced a lunar eclipse a few days before September, on August 28, 2007. This lunar eclipse will be followed by a solar eclipse on September 11, 2007.

It can be noted that sometimes the two weeks between eclipses can be a bit unstable, so we begin September in between these two eclipse dates. We may feel more relief and stability after September 11, 2007.

Eclipses involve the two nodes of the Moon, Rahu (north node) and Ketu (south node), where the light of the Sun or Moon is blocked temporarily from us here on Earth. So symbolically, something hidden or forgotten, now comes to light or into our awareness. Eclipses are times of spiritual initiation, and good for introspection, meditation, and contemplation. As one can feel more confused or challenged during the eclipse time, it is recommended that important decisions or events should not be started around eclipse dates.

The lunar eclipse on August 28, 2007 occurs at 10 degrees Aquarius, in the nakshatra of Shatabhisha. This section of the zodiac is connected to healing energy, so the theme may be about one’s health, or the consideration of using alternative healing techniques such as herbs or flower essences to boost one’s vitality. There is a secretive nature to Shatabhisha, so one might feel the need to go within more than usual during the beginning of September.

The solar eclipse on September 11, 2007 is at 24 degrees Leo, in the nakshatra of Purva Phalguni. This nakshatra rules creativity, prosperity, and marital relationships, as the symbol of this nakshatra is the marriage or conjugal bed. So the above mentioned themes may be brought to light around this eclipse date. Maybe we need to be more creative within our relationships as well as define what being “prosperous” means to us in our world.

Also the planet Venus turns direct on September 8, 2007 (having been retrograde since July 27, 2007 – see last month’s article). So now we may move forward in our loving and creative endeavors, as gleaned from our reflective period when Venus was retrograde in August. We may feel more creative urges now as Venus shifts direction.

Debra Infante, Vedic astrologer, can be reached at (928) 639-0623 for astrological consultations, either in person or by phone.
