ALUMNI CORNER
Alison Schmuckal (July, 2007) made it safe and sound to Oregon and is loving the Northwest, where she is teaching school and practicing yoga.
Brandi Beeson (April, 2004) wrote from the Taipai airport that she was returning to her "village" after a summer yoga adventure in Costa Rica and working in Texas to make enough money to return to her "yogic" dream life. Keep us posted, Brandi, you wandering yogini.
Allison Dutton (January, 2007) recently traveled to Sri Lanka. A friend who lives there and owns a Gourmet food store offered Allison a space to teach yoga. Allison was reminded of learning in her training how doors open and opportunities present themselves. Let us know how it goes, Allison.
Note: Alumni are encouraged to use this column to re-connect, catch-up, and/or share any experiences since graduation. Send info to Sydney.

Mewsings for October:
The Latest Buzz
They buzz, they burrow, they sleep. Meet my friends, the cicadas, the epitome of patient waiting. Though I’ve had many gurus in my lifetimes, nature has always offered the best teachers (though cats are inarguably the most evolved). Recently, I’ve been listening to the wisdom of cicadas. I’ve tried to bring their message through daily cicada gifts to my human friends, albeit partially alive or dead depending on your perspective.
Cicadas are insects that spend most of their life cycle in the nymph stage, hidden inches below the earth’s surface, feeding on roots. After 17 years, the nymphs emerge at the same time, mature into adults, find their way to treetops where their buzzing calls carry through forests and neighborhoods, mate, lay their eggs, and die.
Here’s the cool stuff: The male cicada makes the loudest sound in the insect world. He vibrates ribbed plates in a pair of amplifying “drums” at the base of his abdomen, sending a mating call that can be heard more than four football fields away. A group of cicadas can often drown out even the noisiest lawnmower. Talk about courtship!
Adult cicadas live 30 to 40 days, meaning they focus on the essentials: food, communication, family. No television, no fancy cars or clothes, no decaf caramel macchiatos.
Cicadas are harmless to animal life and all trees except young saplings, whose roots they enjoy. Though cicadas seem masters at sustainable living, they are vulnerable. I’ve watched ravens perched and waiting for the nymphs to emerge from the soil. And in some cultures, people eat cicadas. I myself have been known to indulge in a crunchy cicada snack or two, though I much prefer listening and observing. Interestingly, Chinese medicine uses cicadas to help with hearing-related illnesses. (I’m not sure if these include humans’ typical deafness regarding nature!)
Those who take the time to look will find that cicadas adults are strikingly beautiful, with mostly black bodies, bright red eyes, and reddish orange legs and wing veins. The wings are nearly transparent with an orange tint.
I invite you to join me in feline-like observation and appreciation, taking a few minutes or hours to lie on your back, reveling in golden autumn afternoons, basking in the sun, gazing through half-closed eyes, and listening to the lessons of nature.

Autumn has Arrived!
Autumn is the start of the Vata Season. The temperatures become cooler, the air is drier, and the days get shorter. Ayurveda understands that to remain healthy, we must stay in harmony with the cycles of nature. Vata season requires warm, nurturing activities as part of our daily routine.
One of the best ways to start the day is with a breakfast of stewed apples. Nature provides us an abundance of sweet, juicy apples in the Fall.
The following recipe is simple to prepare and has tremendous health benefits. It helps to return moisture to the dry body tissues. The fiber in cooked apples relieves constipation. Apples are filled with antioxidants, helping to ward off cancers. The spice combination fights winter colds, mucous and lung congestion.
Stewed Apple Breakfast
1 sweet, organic apple (peeled and cut into small pieces)
1 pinch each of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger powder
5 cloves
A handful of dried fruit (raisins, dates, prunes OR figs)
Cook all of the above in ½ cup of water until the fruit is soft.
Discard cloves
Top off with a dab of ghee
Sprinkle with chopped up almonds. (Almonds should be soaked and skins peeled)
Eat warm and enjoy!
An Apple a day, keeps the doctor away!

Vedic Astrology

Saturn and Ketu Conjunction in October
There will be a major conjunction (meeting) of the planets Saturn and Ketu (south node of the Moon) in the sign of Leo in October. The exact conjunction will be at 11 degrees Leo from October 15 through October 25, 2007. The conjunction of Saturn and Ketu in the same sign does not happen often, occurring approximately every 11 years.
Saturn and Ketu (which acts like Mars) are not friends in the Vedic planetary family and are both natural malefics. They both represent renunciation and spiritual awareness, but they express these energies in different ways. Saturn requires hard work, discipline, focus, surrender, and the need to face karma directly in the here and now. Ketu is the planet that represents spiritual liberation or moksha, but it is not so disciplined and focused as Saturn. Ketu is happy renouncing the material world, and ultimately renouncing and transforming the ego. Both are also major karmic planets.
Leo, the sign in which this conjunction will take place, is ruled by the Sun. The Sun is the planet that represents the Divine presence in general, our soul, our self-esteem, physical vitality, and inner voice. The Sun on an outer level represents authority figures (like our father and bosses), our career, the government, and royalty. These are areas of life that may undergo some major changes via the spiritualizing planetary energies of Saturn and Ketu.
Personally, this may be time of surrendering to our inner voice, and detaching from those things that no longer work for us, so we can change the focus of our life for the better. We will need to be practical (Saturn), while letting go of harmful past attachments (Ketu), which may not always be easy, but is necessary. This is a period to obtain a clearer sense of our true identity and spiritual heritage. A great time to meditate, performing those spiritual practices that are truly heartfelt, and discovering deeper, and more meaningful and authentic ways to connect to our soul and our families and communities.
