ALUMNI CORNER
Lara Jiskra (July, 2007) wrote that she has created a class called SPOGA which is a 45 min spin class with 45 min of yoga afterwards, She says-it has attracted a whole new group of people in the class that normally wouldn't have tried it. She switches the classes up every month with different focuses such as balance, learning to do headstands and relaxation. Sounds like fun, Lara.
Mattie Eisenberg (October, 2006) wrote that she has achieved her goal of teaching yoga full time! Since moving back to Boston, teaching opportunities have been presenting themselves left and right. She is now now "blessed" with 10 classes a week and private clients too! She says: "The joy I receive from teaching yoga is one I always new I could achieve in my professional life, but wasn't sure how to get to." Mattie invites anyone who visits Boston to practice with her at Black Lotus Yoga Studio in Central Square, Cambridge!

Be careful what you ask for, Mattie, we may all show up!

The Rites of Spring........
Where Everything is Music
Don't worry about saving these songs!
And if one of our instruments breaks, it doesn't matter.
We have fallen into the place
where everything is music.
The strumming and the flute notes
rise into the atmosphere,
and even if the whole world's harp
should burn up, there will still be
hidden instruments playing.
So the candle flickers and goes out.
We have a piece of flint, and a spark.
This singing art is sea foam.
The graceful movements come from a pearl
somewhere on the ocean floor.
Poems reach up like spindrift and the edge
of driftwood along the beach, wanting!
They derive
from a slow and powerful root
that we can't see.
Stop the words now.
Open the window in the center of your chest,
and let the spirits fly in and out.

4 Lucky Leaves
Ayurveda recommends these four amazing plant leaves to maintain good health. These simple herbs are full of spiritual & medicinal properties.
Tulsi Leaf - Known as Holy Basil, this sacred plant will purify the air in your home. Its highly Sattvic nature brings clarity of mind, opens the heart, and actually cleanses the aura of those who come in contact with it. Medicinally it is taken to relieve cold and flu symptoms. It reduces fever, and as a bronchodilator it will clear sinus/lung congestion and Asthma.
Neem Leaf – This bitter plant works wonders inside and out. It is an anti-fungal, anti-septic, anti-inflammatory anti-viral, and anti-bacterial agent all in one! Crushed neem leaf paste is applied externally for wounds, ulcers, and most all skin diseases - rashes, hives, eczema, ringworm, acne, lice etc.
Drinking the juice of neem leaves is a potent blood purifier and its anti-parasitic action will kill off those unwelcome bugs.
Cilantro Leaf – This simple food garnish can be used as powerful medicine. Cilantro leaf chelates heavy metals such as mercury out of the body. Cilantro juice has a cooling action that brings great relief to the burning symptoms of bladder and urinary tract infections. Sipping the juice of cilantro is recommended to all those who suffer during allergy season. Externally, cilantro pulp soothes burns and itchy heat rashes.
Mint Leaf – This popular culinary herb is wonderful stress reducer. A cup of fresh mint tea has a calming, soothing effect on the nerves, relaxing the body and clearing mental tension. For an upset stomach, Peppermint is a great digestive aid. Traditional Indian meals are often served with a mint chutney for its refreshing taste, but also as an aid to fire up the digestive agni.

Vedic Astrology
Mercury, the Planet of the Intellect
Mercury is the planet that rules the mind, the intellect, communications, languages, discrimination, education, speech, thoughts, logic, and writing. In its highest expression Mercury gives much precision, analytical ability, and great intelligence. You might find Mercury strong in the astrology charts of writers, public speakers, teachers, scientists, computer technicians, musicians, and astrologers.
If Mercury is challenged in a horoscope, it can indicate poor ability to communicate, mental problems, learning disabilities, child-like behavior, scattered thinking, or even excess worry. Sometimes it might even bring verbal manipulation or dishonesty.
Mercury rules the astrological signs of Gemini and Virgo. It is exalted in the sign of Virgo, and debilitated in the sign of Pisces. Mercury is a fairly quick moving planet, and takes about 27 days to travel through a sign, and about a year to travel the entire zodiac. The emerald is the primary gemstone for Mercury. Vishnu, ruler of cosmic intelligence, is the deity for Mercury and the mantra is “Om Budhaya Namaha.”
Mercury is a vata planet as it correlates to the nervous system. Mercury also rules the lungs, respiratory system, and skin. As Mercury is such a changeable planet and takes on the energies of the planet it is associated with, it may also present as pitta and kapha doshas as well.
As this world is increasingly dependent on computers, instant communications, multi-tasking, or the ability to think and work fast, one certainly needs strong and vital Mercury energies to succeed in many professions.
One good way to honor Mercury is to perform pranayama, or any type of technique that focuses on the breath. As Mercury rules the lungs and is an airy planet, this is a way to strengthen its energy. Another remedial measure could be deepening one’s meditation practice, or going into silence, in order to open up to an “inner dialogue” with the Divine. This might be a great way to neutralize any excessive mercurial (vata) energies in this fast-paced world for increased peace of mind.
Debra Infante, Vedic astrologer, can be reached at (928) 639-0623 for astrological consultations, either in person or by phone.
