ALUMNI CORNER

Sherry Garrett (October, 2006) writes that she is teaching a weekly hatha class for anyone who wants to come, but her most concentrated work has been at a geriatric psychiatric outreach program, leading group therapy for seniors with depression and anxiety disorders.  Each group includes pranayama, chair yoga, therapeutic processing, and a traditional "Namaste" closing, which the patient's love to translate as "La luz en mi honra la luz en ti."  When time allows, they chant, using Native American rhythm with Spanish/English lyrics.   On Valentine's Day they painted heart designed mandalas, creating a valentine for "lost loves", either through death or life.  Sherry said it was very touching to hear the painful and tender stories of deceased loved ones.  Her groups are 80% hispanic, speaking only Spanish, so her bi-lingual vocabulary is getting a work out!  When you teach yoga, you learn many things!

Laura Burke (July, 2007) wrote that her life took a big turn after her training. (Debra was right about things changing when she entered her Mercury dasha!)

After graduating this spring (early)with her BS in Biology, she will enter the Ph.D. program in Molecular Plant Sciences at Washington State University.    Laura says:  " I honestly don't think I would have stayed in the sciences if it wasn't for my learning more about Ayurveda and just how powerful and fascinating plants are. Now that I have that kind of connection between my career path and my passion, everything has just taken on so much meaning.  My heart constantly feels so much fuller, more vibrant. I can't really explain it."  Laura also said that "..... those first few months after the training were SO HARD. It brought up a lot of stuff that lingered for a while, but I think now I am beginning to understand it better."

Brandi Beason (April, 2004) wrote that she will be returning to the States (from Thailand) to do her "festival gypsy life" from July 1 through September 22nd.  She would like to offer up her house in Pai, Thailand for sub-lease.  It's a large 2 story house in the rice paddy fields in the northeast part of Thailand in a village called Pai.   It has two bedrooms and 2 baths with all the life necessities, far enough from town to enjoy the quite country life style but a quick bike ride to town.  It is a perfect space to do nothing or plan a day of healing with REALLY affordable prices. To find out more about Pai go to:  www.allaboutpai.com.   Sub-leasing duties...

Feeding Charlie man, the healthiest cat in Thailand; keeping the plants alive and well; enjoying your time relaxing and living the dream.  Cost:   $80/ week, $200/ month (plus electric about $10-20).  If interested, check out the photo page and contact Brandi with any questions. View photos at:

Wisdom from the Pleiades

My friend Barbara Marciniak came to my temple here to give her yearly spiritual update with channelings of the Pleaidians, a collective consciousness that are from the Pleiades. The Pleiades are a cluster of stars in the constellation of Taurus that many native and indigenous tribes have looked at as the home of their ancestors and elders. Barbara called me her kitty buddy... and the Pleiadians spoke very highly of animals on this planet and their role bringing love to people... so I would like to share my column space with them and some of the wisdom that they have to share for these upcoming times.

"Throughout the cycles of time, humankind has created and endured untold changes. Soul/spirits come to Earth in pursuit of love and to accomplish meaningful and noble deeds...Your heritage is founded on the principles of initiation - to overcome the fears of physical reality by learninig how to manage energy in order to keep your body alive and wll int he third-dimensional world....You are entering uncharted territory and must recalibrate your relationship to relaity. This si a time of major readjustments  that involve changing the way you live. Simplify, be practical and reduce consumption. Be efficient and learn how to operate with minimal means. A mass agreemenet is unfolding to slow reality down and you must make room for the new awareness to take root....If possible, pay off your debts immediately and establish a self-sustaining lifestyle, especially regarding food and water.

Out of necessity , the victory garden will make a big comeback, so learn all you can about living with the land. Be preapared to grow yuor won food.   Purchase high quality heirloom seeds and learn how to saveyour own seeds, just as your ancestors did. take a course in permeculture and plant an edible landscape. Buy a share in a local community -supported farm is another practical option. Community support and working together will be essential

The Ayurvedic Corner

Spring Cleaning

After a long winter we finally see the snow melt and the cold hard earth begin to thaw out.

Ayurveda understands that in Spring, our bodies similarly experience a thawing out, allowing fluids to secrete and flow freely, making it a perfect time to flush out toxins.   In order to stay healthy and ward off illness, Ayurveda recommends a seasonal cleanse called Pancha Karma

Pancha Karma cleansing is unique in that it is extremely gentle and nurturing. It is ideal for anyone who feels achy, low energy, allergy prone, overweight, mentally or emotionally stuck. The five main PK procedures clean out the body of deep seated toxins or Ama. Ama is accumulated from undigested foods, chemicals and environmental impurities.

PK consists of daily Abhyangha massages using herbalized oils to loosen the toxins from the tissues.  These massages are followed by a steam bath that opens up the pores. Special treatments like Shiro Dhara (oil poured on the forehead) and Nasya (medicinal oils in the nasal and sinus passages) are done to clear out mental and emotional stress.

Pancha Karma’s aim is  to rekindle the digestive fire, and burn off impurities. Therefore diet during this time is limited to a very simple soupy Kitchari (split yellow Mung beans, basmati rice, and digestive spices).  Sipping on hot water and herbal teas throughout the cleanse clears out the lymphatic channels.

A little melted Ghee is drunk every morning for internal lubrication. A series of  herbal and oil enemas help to clear out and nourish the colon. Special Ayurvedic herbs are taken to clean out the blood, liver, and balance all the organ systems.

Following the PK , regular foods and  activities are gradually reintroduced in the daily routine. Certain Rasayanas, or rejuvenative herbal tonics given help support the immune system and rebuild healthier tissue.

Pancha Karma is traditionally done in an Ayurvedic clinic setting for at least 7 days with trained practitioners. However at the very least, one can do a simple 3 day home cleansing program.

Just as we take a few days this Spring season to clean out the dust around our homes, and the accumulated clutter in our closets and drawers,  we should also make a little effort to clean out our bodies.   We can than make room for new, healthier habits and attitudes.

To schedule a Pancha Karma or learn more about Ayurveda, please contact Avani Robinson.

 Vedic Astrology

The Sun in Aries

In Vedic astrology, using the sidereal zodiac, the Sun will enter the sign of Aries on April 13, 2008 and stays in this sign until May 14, 2008. This of course, happens every year at this time, and could be considered auspicious as the Sun is exalted in this sign. This is a time of new beginnings!

With the Sun in Aries it is a favorable time to take initiative and begin new undertakings. One may feel more active, vital, courageous, and joyful. This is a good period for those in leadership positions, as the Sun rules government, royalty, and superiors. This might be a good time to work also on any self-esteem issues and connecting deeper to the soul. We can feel more confident to be more self-expressive now, enacting our deeper desires.

On the challenging side, we could be more impatient that usual, and become too excited or do things to quickly and regret it later. We can get overheated not only emotionally (with an increase of anger) but physically with increased pitta ailments, like headaches, rashes, inflammation, or trouble sleeping.

To honor the Sun one can recite the planetary mantra, Om Suryaya Namaha, or the seed mantra of Ram. Also, by repeating the Gayatri mantra we pay homage to the energies of our divine inner Sun.

Debra Infante, Vedic astrologer, can be reached at (928) 639-0623 for astrological consultations, either in person or by phone.
